Step aboard for a 90-minute cruise through Ireland’s only fjord, and you’ll quickly see why it’s one of the most memorable ways to experience Connemara. As we sailed along, I found myself craning my neck at the dramatic silhouettes of the Twelve Bens and Maumturk Mountains, their peaks reflected perfectly in the calm waters below. Mussel farms dotted the fjord, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a playful pod of dolphins weaving through the sheltered waters—something I was lucky enough to catch, and it honestly made the trip feel magical.
The boat itself is comfortable in any weather, with a cozy cafe and bar inside, but I couldn’t resist the open top deck. Standing there, feeling the Atlantic wind on my face and the spray of the fjord on my hands, made the scenery feel even more alive. Every turn of the fjord brought a new perspective—steep cliffs one moment, tranquil water the next, with mountains framing the horizon in every direction.
For me, the highlight wasn’t just the views, but the sense of freedom. There’s something about being out on the water, with the wind and the mountains all around, that makes you feel both small and completely connected to the wild beauty of this part of Ireland. It’s a cruise I’d happily take again and again.
