Pull off the Causeway Coastal Route for one of its most dramatic panoramas at Gortmore Viewpoint. From the moment you step out of your car, you're met with breathtaking views stretching across Lough Foyle to Donegal and, on a clear day, even as far as the Scottish islands of Islay and Jura. It's the perfect spot for a picnic, with tables provided, and you can't miss the impressive statue of the sea god Manannán Mac Lir watching over the waters. While simply soaking in the view is enough, there are also short, signposted trails if you fancy a stroll along the clifftops.
At the heart of the viewpoint stands a striking statue of Manannán mac Lir, the ancient Celtic sea god. Facing out towards the ocean, the figure adds a strong sense of place and mythology, linking the landscape to Ireland’s deep maritime heritage and giving the viewpoint a more contemplative atmosphere than a typical roadside stop.
The area itself is simple and open, allowing the scenery to remain the main focus. With parking close by and only a short walk required, it’s an easy stop for travellers following the north coast route. It appeals to photographers, history and folklore enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a quiet pause along the journey.
Changing light and weather constantly reshape the view. Calm, clear days reveal sweeping coastal detail, while wind and cloud bring a powerful, elemental feel that suits the statue’s watchful presence.
Note: The viewpoint is exposed and can be windy, so warm layers are recommended. Care should be taken near cliff edges, particularly in wet or gusty conditions.
