🚁 Drone Rules in Oman

What You Need to Know Before Bringing One

Oman

Drone regulations in Oman are strict. Unlike some countries where recreational flying is common, Oman requires official permission to fly a drone. You have to obtain approval PRIOR to arrival from the relevant authorities. If you don't, you can expect your drone to be confiscated at the airport (they do check thoroughly). Flying without permission can result in fines or confiscation.

The Serb Tourist Plan (FlySerb)

Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority runs an official platform called Serb (FlySerb), which allows tourists to apply for a temporary drone permit online before arriving in the country.

Through this system, you have to:

  • Register your drone

  • Complete a short knowledge test (simple and straightforward)

  • Apply for a tourist permit

The application takes around 2–3 working days, so apply at least 48 hours before arrival. The permit fee is approximately 25 OMR for personal drones under 5kg.

Bringing Your Drone into Oman

If you have an approved Serb permit:

  • Declare your drone at the airport.

  • Show your documentation.

  • Pay a customs/import fee.

Officially, customs may charge 10% of the drone’s value. In practice, many travelers (including myself) were charged the minimum amount - around 10 OMR - rather than a calculated percentage of retail value.

Without a permit, your drone can be confiscated and held until departure. Do not skip this step.

Where You Can (and Cannot) Fly

With a permit, you can legally fly in over 127 approved ā€œgreen zonesā€ across Oman. However, there are still some no-fly zones:

  • Airports

  • Military areas

  • Government buildings

  • Border regions

Only fly within approved ā€œgreen zonesā€ shown on the Serb platform. Oman is very protective of its airspace, so take this seriously.

Is It Worth Bringing a Drone?

If aerial footage is important to you, yes! The landscapes in Oman are incredible from above: desert dunes, canyon drops, mountain switchbacks.
