Driving in Oman - What to Expect

Driving in Oman is, in a way, kinda easy.

Highways are modern and well maintained. Once you leave Muscat, traffic drops significantly. Long stretches of open road are common, and driving often feels calm and spacious.

Your biggest challenge won’t be other cars - it will be terrain.

Off-Roading Tips

Not every off-road section in Oman is "difficult", or extreme.

Many tracks are:

  • Gravel

  • Rocky but manageable

  • Wide enough

  • Well-used

The key principles:

  • Most rental cars in Oman are automatic, including 4x4s. However, many allow you to switch into manual mode. Use it! Manual mode gives you more control, especially on steep descents. On long downhill sections (like Wadi Bani Awf), let the engine control your speed instead of riding the brakes!

  • Go slower than you think you need to. Even with zero off-roading experience before this trip, I found that taking things slowly and approaching things in a calm way made a huge difference in confidence and made everything feel more manageable.

  • If something looks sketchy, get out and assess first. For example, with water crossings, ALWAYS check the depth. It can be deceiving from far away, and uneven rocky bottoms can cause issues quickly.

  • Most importantly: know when to stop. Don't push it, especially when alone!

Navigation & Offline Maps

Signal disappears in:

  • Wahiba Sands

  • Wadi Bani Awf

  • Remote mountain camps

Download offline maps before entering remote areas.

Apps that work well:

  • Google Maps (offline mode)

  • Maps.me

  • iOverlander (for camps & water)

Never rely solely on data.

Animals on the Road

This is what you need to pay attention to.

Goats are everywhere, especially in the mountain areas!

You’ll also see:

  • Camels near the desert

  • Occasional donkeys

  • Free-roaming livestock in villages

Do not speed in rural areas. Animals can appear suddenly and unpredictably.

Driving at night increases this risk significantly.
