Wahiba Sands (also called Sharqiya Sands) is a vast desert is made up of rolling, wind-sculpted dunes, some reaching up to 100 meters high! The dunes eventually connect to the legendary Empty Quarter, one of the largest sand deserts in the world.

Driving here honestly feels like entering a completely different planet.

The first large dune when entering Wahiba can feel intimidating, but after about 15 minutes I found the driving surprisingly manageable. The main track that runs through the desert is generally in good condition, though you’ll still encounter steep sandy climbs and soft patches.

Because I’m not an experienced desert driver and was traveling alone, I made a conscious decision to stay relatively close to the main track, instead of venturing too deep into the dunes. Getting stuck solo in soft sand would not have been ideal.

Road Conditions: Sand, steep dunes
4x4 Required: Yes (essential)

Approximate Camp Location:
I drove into the desert from Bidiyah and spent around four hours navigating the dunes before choosing a campsite. I ended up here:

21°49'03.1"N 58°45'35.7"E

I chose a spot with some distance from the main track but not so far that I’d be completely isolated. It felt remote, quiet, and honestly, surreal. Camping COMPLETELY alone surrounded by sand was a very special experience.

Things to Know

  • Avoid driving at night

  • Stay near established tracks if inexperienced

  • Keep momentum when climbing dunes

  • Always carry more water than you think you need
