Jebel Shams literally means “Mountain of the Sun.” At around 3,009 meters (9,872 feet) above sea level, it’s the highest peak in ALL of Oman.

The canyon below Jebel Shams is called Wadi Ghul, and is often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of Arabia”. The views from the edge are easily one of the most impressive in the country!

The drive up is part of the experience. If you’re coming from Wadi Damm, the road becomes steep and unpaved, sometimes sandy and rough. It’s not an easy road, but I drove it as a beginner with no prior off-roading experience, and it was completely manageable. Just take it slow.

Closer to the top, the road becomes paved again.

4x4 Required: Yes (to reach Jebel Shams via this route)
