Don’t Be Surprised by Couvert in Portugal

Why bread, olives and snacks appear before you’ve even ordered.

Porto, Portugal

At many traditional Portuguese restaurants, you’ll be served couvert before your meal. This usually includes a selection of bread, olives, butter, cheese, pâté or small local snacks, and it’s a completely normal part of dining in Portugal.

One thing many visitors don’t realise is that couvert isn’t complimentary. Although it’s brought to your table automatically, you’ll only be charged for the items you eat. If you’d rather not have it, simply tell your server “Não, obrigado/a” when it’s brought over, or leave it untouched.

We almost always keep the couvert because we think it’s part of the Portuguese dining experience. It’s often a great opportunity to try local breads, cheeses and cured meats before your main course.

Good to know

  • Couvert typically costs around €1–€5 per person, depending on the restaurant and what’s served.

  • You only pay for the items you consume.

  • It’s a traditional custom across Portugal, so don’t mistake it for a tourist trap.
