Porto, Portugal

Breakfast in Porto is usually simple, quick and affordable rather than a big sit-down meal.

Most locals stop at a pastelaria or café for a coffee, a pastry or small sandwich, or something quick standing at the counter.

You’ll commonly see:

  • Bica – Portuguese espresso

  • Galão – milky coffee served in a tall glass

  • Meia de leite – half coffee, half milk in a cup

For food, look out for:

  • Pastel de nata – Portugal’s famous custard tart

  • Pão de Deus – soft sweet coconut bun

  • Tosta mista – grilled ham and cheese toastie

Many cafés are busiest between 8–10am on weekdays when locals grab breakfast before work.

Tip: don’t expect long brunch-style breakfasts everywhere. Porto’s traditional cafés are more about quick coffee culture than all-day brunch menus.
