The Douro River is what gives Porto a lot of its character. The famous Ribeira waterfront, port wine cellars in Gaia and traditional rabelo boats all sit along the riverbanks.
Walking along the Douro is one of the best ways to experience the city, especially around sunset when the riverside gets busy with locals, street musicians and outdoor terraces.
Some of the best things to do around the river:
Walk between Ribeira and Vila Nova de Gaia
Watch the sunset from Jardim do Morro
Take a river cruise under Porto’s six bridges
Visit the port wine lodges across the river
If you have extra time, a Douro Valley day trip is completely different from Porto itself – quieter, slower and focused around vineyards and wine estates.
Tip: Ribeira is beautiful but very touristy around peak dinner time. For a calmer riverside atmosphere, walk slightly further along Gaia or towards Foz.
