What to Buy in South Africa
A few things I think are worth taking home from South Africa.
Fari Sanyika
South Africa
One of my favourite things about travelling is bringing home items that remind me of a place long after the trip ends. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or looking for gifts, here are a few things I think are worth taking home from South Africa.
🍫 Snacks & Treats Locals Love
Ouma Rusks
A South African pantry staple that’s perfect for dipping into coffee or tea. They’re crunchy, comforting, and one of the first things I pack when travelling overseas.
Biltong
South Africa’s most famous snack. Think of it as premium air-dried meat, available in flavours ranging from traditional to chilli and garlic.
Droëwors
A dried sausage made with traditional spices. It’s a favourite road trip snack and pairs perfectly with biltong.
Mrs Ball’s Chutney
A sweet and tangy chutney that’s been a household favourite for generations. Locals add it to sandwiches, stews, curries, and braais.
NikNaks
One of South Africa’s most nostalgic snacks. These cheesy maize puffs are a childhood favourite and surprisingly addictive.
Wilson’s Toffees
A classic South African caramel toffee that’s been loved for generations.
Beacon TV Bar
A uniquely South African chocolate bar filled with caramel and crisped rice.
Peppermint Crisp
A mint chocolate favourite that’s also used in one of South Africa’s most iconic desserts: peppermint crisp tart.
Zoo Biscuits
Colourful iced biscuits that many South Africans grew up eating.
Bakers Tennis Biscuits
A coconut biscuit that’s delicious on its own and used in many classic South African desserts.
🎁 Souvenirs Worth Packing
Handmade Beadwork
From jewellery to animal figurines, South African beadwork reflects the country’s rich cultural traditions and supports local artisans.
Wire Art
Handcrafted sculptures made from recycled wire are colourful, creative, and easy to pack.
African Print Textiles
Look for table runners, cushion covers, bags, or clothing featuring vibrant African-inspired prints.
Ceramic Pottery
South Africa has an incredible community of ceramic artists producing beautiful mugs, bowls, and home décor.
Local Wine
South African wines are internationally acclaimed and often offer exceptional value compared to overseas prices.
Rooibos Tea
Naturally caffeine-free and grown only in South Africa’s Cederberg region, rooibos is one of the country’s most distinctive exports.
Amarula
A cream liqueur made from the indigenous marula fruit. It makes a great gift if you’re checking luggage.
👗 Proudly South African Designers
Maxhosa Africa
Known worldwide for bold knitwear inspired by Xhosa heritage, Maxhosa creates contemporary luxury fashion that’s unmistakably South African.
Pichulik
Handcrafted statement jewellery inspired by African traditions, storytelling, and contemporary design.
Mungo
Beautiful woven towels, blankets, and home textiles made in the Garden Route town of Plettenberg Bay.
Sealand Gear
My go-to recommendation for durable bags and travel accessories made using recycled and responsibly sourced materials.
Freedom of Movement
Stylish leather bags, footwear, and accessories designed and crafted in South Africa.
Bathu
A proudly South African sneaker brand that’s become a local success story, known for comfortable shoes and vibrant designs.
MaXhosa Home
If you love interiors, the home collection brings the same striking patterns and colours into blankets, cushions, and décor.
Skip the generic airport souvenirs if you can. Some of my favourite finds have come from local markets, independent boutiques, wineries, and small design stores. Not only will you take home something more unique, but you’ll also be supporting South African makers and small businesses.
