Hiking in Johannesburg can be an exciting experience, but you need to keep your wits about you due to the poverty in our country.

The best thing you can do is hike in a group, especially if you're a lady. I've never had any issues, and it's nothing to be overly concerned about, but you'd rather be safe than sorry.

If you're a guy, you'll likely be fine hiking alone, but it's better (and more fun) to go in a group if you can. If you really can't find anyone, message me (@harrisonwasthere), and I'll try to come with you.

If you're a lady and want to do a proper solo hike, I'd recommend the Hennops Trails or the Klipriviersberg Trails as there will be other hikers around. Even then, I'd still bring pepper spray just in case or a whistle.

Lastly, when you start your hike, send your location to a family member or friend, or better yet share your live location. This is just another preventative thing that may help you if you really need it.

Some good numbers to take down:

South African police service: 10111

Moutain Rescue: 074 125 1385 or 074 163 3952

No need to be worried or stressed about any of the hikes, but it is South Africa and you want to be prepared.

Enjoy the trails!
