If you’re looking to squeeze the most out of your annual leave in NSW, 2026 is full of opportunities to turn a few days off into long, rejuvenating breaks. By strategically planning around public holidays, you can enjoy up to 52 days off using only 20 days of leave—that’s 2.6 days off per leave day! Here’s how to make it happen.

1. January – Australia Day

Kick off the year with a long break!

With Australia Day on Monday, 26 January 2026, taking leave from Tuesday 27 to Friday 30 January gives you 9 days off when combined with the weekend (Saturday 24 Jan – Sunday 1 Feb). Perfect for a summer escape along the NSW coast or a relaxed city break.

2. Easter – The Big Block

Easter 2026 offers the ultimate long holiday. With Good Friday on 3 April and Easter Monday on 6 April, adding leave from 30 March to 2 April and 7–10 April gives a massive 16-day break. This is ideal for exploring the Blue Mountains, enjoying a road trip along the South Coast, or simply recharging with family.

3. June – King’s Birthday

The King’s Birthday falls on Monday, 8 June, so taking Tuesday 9 to Friday 12 June off extends your time away to 9 days (Saturday 6 – Sunday 14 June). A perfect mid-year escape to NSW wineries or a quiet mountain retreat.

4. October – Labour Day

With Labour Day on Monday, 5 October, taking leave from 6–9 October grants another 9-day break (Saturday 3 – Sunday 11 October). Consider visiting Hunter Valley vineyards, coastal towns, or a nature getaway in the hinterlands.

5. December / New Year – Even Better Than Before

The end-of-year break in NSW is golden. With Christmas on Friday 25 December, an additional day off on Monday 28 December, and New Year’s Day on Thursday 1 January 2027, taking leave on 21–24 Dec and 29–31 Dec results in a whopping 16-day holiday (Saturday 19 Dec – Sunday 3 Jan). Ideal for a festive season road trip, beach retreat, or visiting family.
