What you'll do
On this adventure you will be exploring the stunning landscapes of the Icelandic highlands, places like Landmannalaugar, Langisjór, Sigöldugljúfur, Háifoss, and many more.
Things to know before you go:
The highlands are only open in the summer, you can check to see if roads are open here https://umferdin.is
For this trip a 4x4 is required and you will need one that is specifically allowed into the highlands by your rental company, GoCampers hava a few higland models available here and you can get 5% off with code: eli5
You also need to be comfortable driving in rough conditions and through water as there are a few river crossings along the way.
Also note that water levels in the river crossings can change depending on weather.
Some places in the higlands have very limited or even no cell service at all, so make sure to have offline maps saved on your phone in case you get lost.
Weather can be unpredictable so be prepared, and keep a close eye on the forecast.
Beginning June 20th, 2024 there’s a new parking reservation system in place in Landmannalaugar. You have to reserve your parking spot in advance when arriving at Landmannalaugar between June 20th and September 15th, 2025, between 8AM and 3PM. Otherwise you may be denied parking.
Day 1
Today you will be driving from Reykjavík up to the highlands to Landmannalaugar, hitting some amazing spots along the way there.
Make sure to grab some breakfast in Reykjavík and go to one of the supermarkets Bónus or Krónan to stock up enough food/snacks and drinks to last you the whole trip, and maybe even a little bit extra just in case if you get stuck up there for any reason.
Once you are stocked up it's time to head out.

Your second stop of the day is Háifoss, one of Icelands tallest waterfalls.
To get there you drive from road 32 and turn on to road 332 and continue driving up past the electrical wires until you see the parking lot.
Once you are there you can enjoy the view from the cliffs on top and/or decide to hike down to the base of the waterfall.

Next you will drive road 26 to the Highland Center Hrauneyjar, where you can fill up your car at the gas pump out front.
