5. How to Choose the Right Camp

Be sure to read the "National Parks and Reserves" before going through this tip. That will help differentiate the different locations.
Then, once you decide on where you want to go, you'll want to look at camps within each. Actually, sometimes you know a camp you want to go to, and that's ok, too... but if you need help narrowing the camps down, this is the way to go.
I'll preface this by saying there in an incredible amount of overlap in how camps categorize themselves. It's frankly madening.
So I'll break them down, below, and try to provide as much detail in each individual spot as possible.
Luxury vs. Mid-range vs. Rustic
Again, even with just 3 categories, there is a lot of overlap. For instance, a very "rustic" camp can still have very comfortable beds, pillows, towels and indoor or outdoor showers, things that might be considered luxury. But as a general guideline, here goes:
Luxury Camps ($$$)
If you’re picturing a 5 star, once-in-a-lifetime, “wow I can’t believe I’m here” kind of experience, this is it.
Luxury camps combine being deep in the bush with a very high level of comfort and service. You still feel like you’re on safari, but everything is taken care of in a seamless, almost effortless way.
What to expect:
Large, beautifully designed tents or suites with real beds, ensuite bathrooms, and often indoor and outdoor showers
Exceptional food and drinks, often with flexible dining times and locations
Highly personalized service, sometimes with a private guide and vehicle
Extras like plunge pools, spa services, or private decks overlooking wildlife areas
The more lux lodges may offer butler service, a liquor assortment in room, air-conditioning, a gym, library, even childcare services.
Prime locations, often in private conservancies with fewer vehicles
Be aware that some lodges may sacrifice game viewing for high luxury offerings.
Who it’s best for:
First-time safari travelers who want a smooth, stress-free experience
Special occasions like honeymoons, anniversaries or big trips
Travelers who value comfort, privacy, and top-tier guiding
The rooms in this category usually have 4 solid walls, so for those nervous about security and animals outside the door, these may be the best.
Mid-Range Camps ($$)
This is the sweet spot for many people, and where you get an excellent safari experience without the highest price tag.
Mid-range camps still offer comfort and great guiding, but with fewer frills and a slightly more structured feel than luxury properties.
What to expect:
Comfortable tents or lodge-style rooms with ensuite bathrooms
Good, hearty meals served at set times
Shared game drives with other guests, typically in well-guided vehicles
Friendly, welcoming atmosphere that can feel more social
Great locations, though not always as exclusive as luxury camps
Rooms (or tents) can still be quite large, with a separate bathroom area, twin or king beds, nice linens, towels, bathroom accessories, desk and chairs. Floors are typically wooden but may be made of canvas. The walls are usually made of canvas with mesh windows.
Who it’s best for:
Travelers who want a high-quality safari without going all out on cost
First-timers who are comfortable with a bit less privacy and flexibility
People who care more about wildlife and guiding than luxury touchesThis is the sweet spot for many people, and where you get an excellent safari experience without
Rustic Camps ($)
This is the closest you’ll feel to being truly out in the wild.
Rustic camps are simpler, more stripped-down, and often more adventurous. The focus is on the environment and the experience rather than comfort or amenities.
What to expect:
Basic tents or rooms, sometimes with bucket showers or limited electricity
Simple but satisfying meals
Fewer staff and less formal service
A stronger sense of being immersed in nature, sometimes with wildlife sounds very close by at night, sometimes right outside your tent!
Often located in remote or less-visited areas, but not necessarily
Who it’s best for:
Adventurous travelers who don’t mind giving up some comfort
Repeat safari-goers looking for a more raw or off-the-beaten-path experience
Travelers prioritizing location and wildlife over amenities
No matter which level you choose, remember, you are still on safari. You will see incredible wildlife, spend your days on game drives, and fall asleep to the sounds of the bush.
The biggest differences often come down to comfort, privacy, and how personalized the experience feels.
After many years, I continue to stay across all three levels depending on the trip, and I’ve had amazing experiences in each.
