Sossusvlei

The shot everyone chases: The towering rust-red dunes of Sossusvlei, especially Dune 45 and Big Daddy, are among the most photographed landscapes on the planet. The contrast between the blood-orange sand, the cracked white clay pan, and the skeletal dead trees of Deadvlei next door is absolutely otherworldly.

📸 Insta tip: Arrive before sunrise and climb Dune 45 for a golden-hour silhouette shot looking over the pan. Shoot in portrait mode for dramatic foreground-to-sky depth. Early morning also means cooler temps and fewer crowds.

Spitzkoppe

The shot everyone chases: A dramatic granite inselberg rising 1,784 m from the flat plains, Spitzkoppe earns its nickname "Namibia's Matterhorn." The wide, open landscape makes it perfect for Milky Way astrophotography — it's one of Southern Africa's best stargazing spots.

📸 Insta tip: Set up your tripod after dark for a long-exposure shot of the rock silhouetted against a star-filled sky. During the day, the natural rock arches offer incredible framing for portraits. Camp on-site for full golden hour + night sky access.

Kolmanskop.

A former diamond-mining town that the desert is slowly reclaiming, Kolmanskop is pure surrealism. Rooms half-filled with sand, peeling pastel walls, and broken furniture — every corner is a ready-made frame.

📸 Insta tip: Visit right after sunrise when shafts of light pour through crumbling windows and create dramatic light-and-shadow scenes inside the rooms. Bring a wide-angle lens to capture full rooms. Wear light, breathable clothing — it gets very hot inside quickly.

Outside of the ghost town is some very nice old railways as well as stations where you can move freely for astronomy photography

Sandwich Harbour

The shot everyone chases: Towering Namib dunes crashing directly into the Atlantic Ocean — a geological meeting that looks like two worlds colliding. The colour contrast between the warm sand and the deep blue water is extraordinary, especially at low tide.

📸 Insta tip: Book a 4x4 guided day tour (the only way to access it legally). Shoot from the top of the dunes looking down toward the water for a dramatic aerial-style perspective without needing a drone. Sunset is magic here.
