Costa Rica
Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast (Limón province) has fewer beaches than the Pacific side, but many people think they’re more tropical, wild, and authentic. Most of the best ones are between Cahuita - Puerto Viejo - Manzanillo, near the Panama border.
Here are some of the best beaches on the Caribbean side:
1. Punta Uva (often considered the most beautiful)
Why it’s special
Calm turquoise water and soft light sand
Palm trees and jungle right on the beach
Good for swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling
Punta Uva is widely considered one of the most stunning beaches on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast thanks to its clear water, coral reefs, and tropical scenery.
📍 About 20 minutes south of Puerto Viejo
2. Playa Manzanillo
Why people love it
Quiet fishing village vibe
Long crescent beach with coral reefs offshore
Inside the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge
The beach is about 2 miles long and feels very untouched, with jungle, wildlife, and great snorkeling when the sea is calm.
📍 At the end of the road south of Puerto Viejo
3. Playa Cocles
Best for
Surfing 🌊
Lively beach atmosphere
Bars and restaurants nearby
This is one of the most popular beaches near Puerto Viejo and is known for its good surf waves and golden sand.
📍 5 minutes from Puerto Viejo
4. Playa Blanca (Cahuita National Park)
Why it’s amazing
Inside Cahuita National Park
White sand + calm water
Excellent snorkeling on coral reefs
It’s one of the most peaceful Caribbean beaches in the country and great for wildlife spotting like monkeys and raccoons.
📍 Near the town of Cahuita
5. Playa Chiquita
Why go
Quiet and less crowded
Natural tide pools and coral formations
Jungle scenery and wildlife
This small beach south of Puerto Viejo is perfect if you want a more secluded tropical feel.
📍 10 minutes south of Puerto Viejo
Quick local tip:
If you want the best stretch of Caribbean beaches, drive or bike this route:
