Rincón de la Vieja National Park, located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, is centered around the active Rincón de la Vieja volcano and features volcanic craters, fumaroles, boiling mud pots, hot springs, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife. The park is about 230 km (≈4 hours by car) from San José and 24 km (≈45 minutes) from Liberia, making it accessible for both day trips and overnight visits.

The park offers six main trails. The Las Pailas Loop Trail (3 km / 1.9 mi) is easy to moderate and takes 1–2 hours, looping through dry forest past mud pots and fumaroles. The La Cangreja Waterfall Trail (~10 km / 6.2 mi) is moderate to difficult, taking 4–5 hours to reach a beautiful waterfall. The Escondida Waterfall Trail (~8.6 km / 5.3 mi) is moderate and also takes 4–5 hours. The Las Rocas Trail (4.5 km / 2.8 mi) is moderate, taking 2–3 hours with scenic forest views. The Rincón de la Vieja Crater Trail (~5 km / 3.1 mi) is difficult and currently closed due to volcanic activity. Finally, the Pailas Waterfalls Trail (~2 km / 1.2 mi) is easy and takes about 1 hour, suitable for families.

Visitors typically spend 2–5 hours exploring the park, while full-day hikes are possible for those tackling longer trails. Entrance fees are about $16.95 USD for non-resident adults and $5.65 USD for children, with local rates in colones for Costa Rican residents. Rincón de la Vieja National Park is perfect for those seeking volcanic landscapes, geothermal activity, waterfalls, and hiking experiences ranging from easy walks to more challenging jungle trails.

TIP: IT WOULD BE IDEAL TO DO YOUR RESERVATIONS IN WITH SOME DAYS IN ADVANCE ON THE OFFICAL SINAC PAGE.
