About: Maheno was an ocean liner that sailed between New Zealand and Australia from 1905 to 1935. It also served as a hospital ship during World War I, transporting casualties from Gallipoli to Malta and later back to New Zealand and the UK. In 1935, while being towed to Japan for scrap, the Maheno got caught in a cyclone and washed ashore on Fraser Island, where it remains as a popular tourist attraction. Despite attempts to refloat it, the wreck has slowly deteriorated over the years, and access is now prohibited due to safety concerns.
