Get ready for one of the most spectacular drives of your life on the Million Dollar Highway. This famous 25 mile stretch of U.S. 550 winds and clings to the mountainside, connecting the historic towns of Ouray and Silverton. You'll navigate thrilling hairpin turns and pass by sheer cliffs (often without guardrails) so it's not for the faint of heart, but the jaw dropping views of the San Juan Mountains are more than worth it. Plan for plenty of stops at the scenic overlooks to soak in the incredible alpine scenery.

Insider Tips:

  • The drive is stunning and doable for all vehicles. It's called the "most dangerous road in America" but it's paved and safe if you take your time. There are no guard rails for part of it which makes for a little daring adventure. (Do NOT recommend trying in winter conditions.)

  • Go during the end of Sept or the beginning of Oct for peak fall colors!

  • Be sure to leave time to stop by Cascade Creek Falls on your drive! It's a quick hike to the waterall and family friendly.
