For a true backcountry adventure, head up to Ice Lake, a pristine alpine gem that makes you earn the view. The trailhead starts at Mineral Creek Campground. You'll gain elevation quickly, sweating your way up through the forest before you'll emerge at the alpine tundra. It will take your breath away. This is a hard hike, but the reward is an incredible sense of solitude and accomplishment as you gaze into the crystal clear, gatorade blue water.

Insider Tips:

• This is a hard hike. Only recommended for experienced hikers that are used to altitude.

• For an extra adventure, make your way to Island Lake (full details on Island Lake are provided on a separate activity on this map).

• Backpacking is allowed here. Be sure to camp at least 200 feet from the lake. And be ready for high altitude storms.

• Dog friendly (for experienced hiking pups)!

• Swing by Silverton on your way back from the hike and grab a burrito from El Bendito.

• Start this hike early. Be off the mountain by the time afternoon storms roll in.

• This is moose country. Be on the lookout for moose and keep dogs far away from them.

• The lake is ACTUALLY THIS BLUE. Very little editing was done to my photos. It's called gatorade blue for a reason!
