Get ready for a fantastic workout with a huge payoff on the Gem Lake Trail, a local favorite just a stone's throw from Estes Park. This 3.4-mile round trip hike is a steady climb, gaining about 1,000 feet in elevation, but the stunning views of Estes Park and the surrounding peaks that open up along the way are more than worth the effort.
You'll navigate through unique granite formations and up stone steps before arriving at the beautiful, secluded Gem Lake, a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a snack before heading back down.
Insider Tips:
***National Parks pass required: you will need an annual America The Beautiful Pass or a Day pass, which is available to purchase at the entrance or online ($30-$35 per vehicle). Timed entry reservations required May - October. You can make reservations at the recreation.gov website.

Gem Lake is wonderful any time of year!
During winter the lake freezes over and you can walk on it (proceed with caution)
Do NOT go into the lake during summer. It is tempting, but leeches thrive in Gem Lake. Ask me how I know this ;-)
