Tucked away in the Wet Mountains, you'll discover a truly unique roadside marvel: a castle built entirely by one man's hand (Jim Bishop) over the last 60 years. This incredible fortress of stone and iron is an adventure to explore, with soaring towers, intricate iron walkways, and beautiful stained glass windows. You're free to wander at your own risk. You can climb the winding staircases to the top for breathtaking views, making it a memorable and slightly daring experience just off the highway.
Insider Tips:
This one is worth the stop. A truly unique Colorado gem.
If you are scared of heights, you probably will not want to climb to the very top. However the castle is stunning even if you stay closer to the ground.
I would not try climbing the steps in winter or when it's icy.
I visited on a nice and sunny winter day in March and it was perfect.
