Get ready for a hike that will leave you breathless in more ways than one as you make your way to the stunningly beautiful Island Lake. This is a HARD hike. The trail from the parking area is a challenging 8 mile round trip that climbs nearly 3,000 feet into the heart of the San Juan Mountains. You'll earn every view as you ascend through wildflower filled meadows and tackle steep switchbacks, but the reward is one of Colorado's most picturesque alpine lakes. The vibrant turquoise water, with its iconic little island, is a sight you won't soon forget, all cradled by a dramatic cirque of rugged peaks.
Insider Tips:
This is one of the best hikes in Colorado. And it is hard. Make sure you're used to high altitude hiking before you attempt it.
This is moose territory. Keep your dog leashed.
My favorite time to visit this area is in July or October. Weather is ideal.
Be aware of afternoon storms. The first time I attempted this hike I was caught in a thunderstorm above tree line (very dangerous, not good), and I didn't make it to the lake. Start early and be back in tree line by the time storms roll in.
This hike is an iconic Colorado gem. Please leave it better than you found it and pack out everything that you pack in. Leave no trace.
The first lake you'll see on this hike is Ice Lake. A stunningly beautiful lake that is actually THAT blue. Stop here for lunch before continuing onto Island Lake.
This area is backpacker friendly. But be aware of storms. I'd camp at Ice Lake to be closer to tree line.
