Get ready for one of the most rewarding and accessible high altitude hikes in the San Juans! Handies Peak is considered one of the easier "14ers" to summit, making it a fantastic choice for a first timer. It was my first 14er! But I promise the panoramic views from the top are absolutely world class. The most popular route starts in the stunning American Basin, famous for its spectacular wildflower displays in July and August. The trail is well defined, leading you past the scenic Sloan Lake before the final push to the 14,048-foot summit. Just a heads up, you'll want a 4x4 or high clearance vehicle to reach the main trailhead, which is about a 75-90 minute drive from Silverton.

Insider Tips:

• This is my favorite 14er! American Basin is stunning (where the trail starts).

• Try this hike during July and August for wildflowers.

• Colorado 14ers (14,000 ft peaks) are like a sub culture of the Colorado hiking community. People travel from all over the world to climb our 58 14,000 ft peaks.

• Altitude sickness is real. If you're planning on climbing a 14er and are not used to high altitude, make sure you arrive to the area a few days before hiking to give your lungs a chance to adjust.

• Bring more water than you think you'll need.

• Start early and be off the mountain by noon. Early afternoon storms are common, they come in quickly and can be extremely dangerous if you are on top of a mountain.

• Pack the 10 essentials for your hike. Make sure to tell somebody when you're expected back.

• 14ers are beautiful hikes. And also very intense. If you need to turn around, never hesitate to do so.
