Welcome to a landscape that feels like another planet, right here in Colorado! You're looking at the tallest sand dunes in North America, with the stunning Sangre de Cristo Mountains as a backdrop. The main fun starts after a short walk from the car park, where you'll cross the seasonal Medano Creek to reach the massive dune field. Hiking up these giants is a real workout, but the views from the top and the thrill of sandboarding back down are absolutely worth it. Make sure to check out Zapata Falls if you're in the area and willing to get wet!
Insider Tips:
I wasn't sure what to expect when I visited the Great Sand Dunes for the first time, but it easily surpassed all my expectations!
There's good camping near the sand dunes if that's the vibe you're going for: Ramble at the Great Sand Dunes or Zapata Falls campground are good options.
We stayed at an airbnb in Crestone an hour away and we're glad we did!
Check out Zapata Falls after a day spent playing in the park.
Great Sand Dunes is the only DOG FRIENDLY national park in Colorado! Be aware the sand gets extremely hot for pups in the summer so bring booties for them or go early or after sunset.
