Welcome to the 'mini-Grand Canyon,' a spectacular landscape of sheer walled red rock canyons and towering monoliths right in our backyard. The best way to soak it all in is by cruising the 23 mile Rim Rock Drive, which offers breathtaking viewpoints at every turn. If you're up for a walk, there are over 40 miles of trails ranging from easy strolls along the canyon rim to more strenuous hikes down into the canyons, getting you up close to the incredible rock formations.
Insider Tips:
Dogs allowed on hard surfaces & walkways only.
Sunrise and sunset completely transform the landscape. The red rock canyons and monoliths glow orange and gold, and you'll have a fraction of the crowds compared to midday. If you can only do one viewpoint, try Independence Monument View at golden hour.
Bring way more water than you think you'll need. People see "Colorado" and expect mountain temperatures, but this is the high desert. Summer temps regularly climb into the 90s and 100s, and there's very little shade on most trails.
Keep your eyes on the cliffs, not just the views. Colorado National Monument is one of the best places in the state to spot bighorn sheep, especially in the early morning.
