Get ready for one of the most stunning drives in Colorado on Gothic Road, a route that transforms from a gentle scenic byway into a rugged high alpine adventure. Starting just north of town, the road meanders through meadows bursting with spectacular wildflowers in the summer and golden aspens in the fall.
You'll pass through the historic townsite of Gothic before the pavement ends and the real adventure begins; the road becomes a challenging 4x4 track leading towards the breathtaking Schofield Pass, so a high clearance vehicle is a must if you plan to explore its upper reaches.
Insider Tips:
Do not attempt Schofield Pass without a high clearance vehicle!
There are numerous amazing pull-offs while traveling on Gothic Road so leave plenty of time to explore. Gothic Road is a destination in itself.
If you want to hike, try Rustler's Gulch off of Gothic Road. It's full of wildflowers during late spring and early summer. You don't have to do the entire trail to enjoy the fields of wildflowers. They are fairly close to the trailhead, after a couple little stream crossings. (This hike may or may not be family friendly depending on skill level and season, please look it up online before going.)
