Right from the edge of town, you can hop on the Bear Creek Trail, a local favorite that's perfect for an afternoon escape. It's a steady, manageable climb along an old dirt road for about 2.5 miles, offering gorgeous views of the valley and leading you to the stunning Bear Creek Falls. The trail is wide and popular, so you'll be in good company, and the reward is a spectacular waterfall cascading down a rugged rock face, a classic Colorado experience.

Insider Tips:

  • Go during the end of September or beginning of October for peak fall colors (timing changes every year, but the last week of Sept and first week of Oct seem to be safer bets).

  • The trail is accessible from town. If you're staying in Telluride, the trail is most likely walkable from your stay.

  • Bonus: take the free gondola after your hike!
