The Wild Animal Sanctuary

Directions

This is one of my favorite activities in Colorado! Prepare for an unforgettable experience at this incredible rescue center, a true sanctuary for majestic animals like lions, tigers, and bears. You'll wander along a 1.5 mile elevated walkway, the longest of its kind in the world, which gives you a unique perspective looking down into the vast, natural habitats of the animals who live there. It’s a peaceful and moving way to see these magnificent creatures roaming freely, knowing they've been given a second chance at a wonderful life.

Insider Tips:

  • Go either right at opening or a few hours before sunset because the animals are WAY more active when it’s cooler out.

  • Budget way more time than you think. People underestimate the massive elevated walkway and end up rushed. Most visitors stay 3–6 hours.

  • Wear better shoes than you think you need. It feels “easy” because it’s flat, but the walkway is LONG and there’s almost zero shade in sections.

  • Bring binoculars if you have them. The habitats are intentionally huge and natural, which is honestly what makes the place so cool compared to a zoo.

  • The elevated walkway is actually genius because the animals perceive humans differently above them, which reduces stress for the animals. Once you know that, the whole experience feels more genuine.

  • You can bring your own snacks/picnic stuff, which is nice because once you’re out on the walkway you’ll probably be there awhile.

  • Winter visits are underrated. Some animals get fluffier/chonkier in colder months and the cooler weather can make predators more active.

  • NO dogs allowed whatsoever, not even staying in the car, and they’re very serious about it.
