Route Description: The Trail Over Kilhusåsen from Åsegarden to Rypelia

How to Get to Åsegarden from Harstad City Center

From Harstad city center, drive north on Riksvei 83 (RV83) toward Narvik. After approximately 7 kilometers, you’ll see signs for Åsegarden on the right-hand side. Turn right and follow the road for about 1 kilometer until you reach the Åsegarden military camp and parking area, which serves as the starting point for the trail. Parking is available nearby.

Trail Description: From Åsegarden to Rypelia Over Kilhusåsen

Part 1: Åsegarden to Kilhusåsen Ridge

The trail begins at Åsegarden and ascends gently through a forested area. This section of the trail is well-marked and offers a steady climb. The path meanders through birch and pine forests, with occasional clearings that provide views of the surrounding landscape.

As you gain elevation, the terrain becomes more open, and you’ll soon reach Kilhusåsen Ridge, a beautiful plateau with panoramic views of Harstad, Vågsfjorden, and the surrounding islands. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the scenery before continuing your journey.

Part 2: Crossing Kilhusåsen

Once on the ridge, the trail levels out slightly, allowing for a more relaxed pace. This section offers a mix of rocky outcroppings and soft mossy terrain. You’ll find some waymarkers along the path to guide you, but it’s advisable to stay aware of the route, especially in foggy conditions.

The ridge provides breathtaking views in all directions, including towards Grytøya and the fjords to the west. Wildlife such as grouse or hares might be spotted along the way, adding to the experience.

Part 3: Descent to Rypelia

After crossing Kilhusåsen, the trail begins to descend towards Rypelia, a serene area surrounded by forest and close to the shoreline. The descent can be a bit steeper in places, so take care on loose rocks or damp sections of the trail.

As you near Rypelia, the trail re-enters a wooded area with a mix of pine and spruce. The final stretch is relatively flat and leads you to Rypelia recreation area, where you’ll find a small picnic area and opportunities to relax or enjoy a packed lunch.

Distance and Time

  • Distance: Approximately 6–7 kilometers

  • Time: 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on pace and breaks

Tips for the Journey

  • Footwear: Wear sturdy hiking boots, as parts of the trail can be uneven and rocky.

  • Clothing: Dress in layers and be prepared for changes in weather, especially on the ridge where it can be windy.

  • Essentials: Bring water, snacks, and a map or GPS for navigation. While the trail is marked, it’s always good to have a backup.

  • Transport: If you don’t plan to hike back to Åsegarden, arrange transportation from Rypelia in advance.

This route over Kilhusåsen offers a perfect blend of forested trails, ridge-top views, and a peaceful endpoint at Rypelia, making it an excellent choice for a half-day adventure in the Harstad area.
