On Moskenesøya, at the outer edge of Lofoten, there are countless hiking opportunities. One option is the charming Munkebu tourist cabin, built in 1991. It is located on Djupfjordheia in Moskenes municipality, at an elevation of 450 meters, about a 2-3 hour hike from Sørvågen. A day trip there is a great experience.

Start from the parking lot on the west side of Sørvågvatnet. Follow the lit trail up towards Studalsvatnet. There is a well-marked trail on the north side of the lake heading toward Tridalsvatnet (follow the signs). A steep ascent leads up a cairned trail high on the eastern side of Tridalsvatnet. Continue following the cairns and signs across Djupfjordheia until you reach the cabin.

If you wish to enter or stay overnight, note that Munkebu is locked and cannot be accessed with a standard DNT key. A key can be obtained from Moskenes Tourist Information in Reine upon presenting a valid DNT membership card. At the same time, all overnight stays must be prepaid for all guests in your group.

The cabin is approximately 47 square meters and offers 15 sleeping places, an entrance area, and a combined living room and kitchen. Additionally, there is a separate annex with a firewood storage and an outhouse. The cabin is well-equipped with a wood stove, gas stove, and kitchenware, but no food is provided. A sleeping bag or sheet bag is required. The use of the cabin follows the standard regulations of the Norwegian Trekking Association. Payments can be made in cash at the cabin or via bank transfer. Firewood should be used sparingly, as all wood must be flown in by helicopter.

The cabin serves as a great base for hikes to nearby peaks, such as Munkan or Hermannsdalstind.
