TIP 2 — GETTING AROUND

The metro goes everywhere. Here's how to use it.

Shenzhen, China

Shenzhen Metro has 17 lines. Every announcement is in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Easier than the London Underground — genuinely.

Pay three ways — Alipay QR code at the gate, tap your foreign Visa or Mastercard at gates marked with international card logos, or buy a Shenzhen Tong travel card at Lo Wu station — gives you 5% off every journey.

Most lines run 6am to 11pm. Check your last train time when you arrive — don't rely on memory.

For anywhere the metro doesn't reach — use DiDi inside WeChat. English interface. Set destination in English. Pay by Alipay. Never try to explain where you're going to a taxi driver in English.
