Ride a Ding Ding Tram
Hong Kong's most iconic experience — and it only costs $1
Kristina's Travels
Hong Kong
The moment you arrive in Hong Kong, jump on one of the city's legendary double-decker trams — locals call them Ding Dings after the bell the driver rings at each stop. If you follow our '3-day Itinerary' jump on a Ding Ding tram on your way to the Mid-Levels.
Grab a seat at the very back on the upper deck. This is non-negotiable. Neon signs, markets and skyscrapers flash past the windows so close you could reach out and touch them — it's the best introduction to Hong Kong you'll ever get, and it costs just HK$3 (less than $1 USD).
The trams run along the entire northern shore of Hong Kong Island from Kennedy Town in the west all the way to Shau Kei Wan in the east. They're frequent, easy to use and run until midnight.
Tip: Pay as you exit using your Credit Card (or Octopus Card — buy one at any MTR station on arrival and load it with HK$200). It works on trams, buses, ferries and the MTR so you'll use it constantly throughout your trip.
We rode the Ding Ding on our very first morning in Hong Kong to the Mid-Levels with our baby daughter Chloe and it immediately became one of our favourite moments of the entire trip. Don't skip it!
