More Than Trailmix for Tailgates - Fueling Your BC Adventures Locally

The secret to a legendary day in the Fraser Valley isn't just the destination - it’s the fuel that gets you there!

There is nothing that kills the epic vibe faster than a hangry adventure partner or a lukewarm sandwich at the top of a Fraser Valley trail climb.

Whether you’re heading into the no-service wilderness of the Sts'ailes FSR or taking a sunset stroll at Lighthouse Park, your meal plan should be as intentional as your itinerary. Here’s how we pack, where we shop, and what we’re snacking on to keep the adventure blood pumping.

1. The Prep: Pack Like a Pro

We’re big fans of the "Tailgate Charcuterie" approach. Instead of pre-made sandwiches that get soggy by noon, we pack locally sourced components in sperated containers to keep things fresh and flavourful.

  • The Cooler Rule: Invest in a high-quality soft-sided cooler. It fits better in the back of a 4x4 than a rigid box. Use frozen water bottles as your ice packs—they keep your food cold and provide a crisp, cold drink once they melt.

  • Prep the Night Before: Wash the berries, slice the BC-grown cucumbers, and portion out the bits of cheese and meats. When you’re trying to catch a 6:00 AM sunrise at Cypress Lookout, you don’t want to be hunting for a knife.

  • The "Trash Out" Kit: Always have a dedicated bag for garbage. Our BC backcountry is pristine; let’s keep it that way.

2. Where the Locals Shop: The "Down That Road BC" Shortlist

You don’t need to spend a fortune at high-end boutiques to eat like a local. We look for spots that bridge the gap between "reasonably priced" and "BC-grown."

  • Otter Co-op (Aldergrove & Multiple Locations): This is a handy place to stop for quick groceries. It’s locally owned, carries a massive amount of Canadian products, and has competitive pricing that rivals the big chains.

  • Langley Farm Market (Langley/Maple Ridge/Coquitlam): If it’s in season in BC, it’s here. It’s the gold standard for fresh produce and an Okanagan connection to fruit without the tourist markup.

  • Ralph’s Farm Market (Murrayville): A family-run staple. We love Ralph's for their direct-from-the-farm berries and their in-house Meridian Meats counter. Grab some BC beef jerky here for the trail—it’s game-changing.

  • Lepp Farm Market (Abbotsford): A bit more up-scale perhaps, but excellent for ready-made meals. If you're heading to Cascade Falls, stop here for their legendary farmer sausages or pre-made sandwiches.

  • No Frills & Save-On-Foods : For the budget-conscious, these are your "safe harbors." Look for the Western Family or Compliments brands—they are Canadian-owned and often source from BC producers.

3. The "Adventure Fuel" Snack List (BC Made)

Skip the generic granola bars. If you want to support local and eat healthy, look for these Fraser Valley favorites in the aisles:

  • Inno Foods Coconut Clusters (Langley): These are a secret weapon. They are keto-friendly, organic, and made right in Langley. High energy, low crash, and totally addictive.

  • Hardbite Chips (Maple Ridge): When you need that salt hit after a steep hike like Hope Lookout, nothing beats a bag of Hardbite. They’re made with local potatoes and no GMO junk.

  • Farmhouse Natural Cheeses (Agassiz): Their goat and cow milk cheeses are the backbone of any good trail picnic. Grab a block of their "Lady Jane" or "Cumin Gouda."

  • HerbaLand Gummies (Richmond): For a quick, low-sugar energy boost, these plant-based vitamin gummies are a travel bag staple.

  • BC Smoked Salmon: Look for Bruce’s Market (Maple Ridge) smoked salmon strips. They are shelf-stable for the day, high in protein, and pure West Coast.

Always leave one "luxury" item in the car for when you finish the hike. For us, it’s usually a cold bottle of locally-pressed cider or a bag of Neufeld Farm Market frozen cookie pucks (okay, maybe bake those before you leave). There is no better feeling than reaching the 4x4, kicking off your boots, and having a high-quality local treat waiting for you.
