Essential Things to Know Before Visiting New Zealand
High season costs & crowds
Traveling during the summer (December to February) is significantly more expensive and much busier than in the winter months. Rental costs for campervans also double around that time.
Campervan travel = immersive freedom
Exploring New Zealand by campervan is one of the best ways to experience the island — it lets you stay close to nature throughout your journey. I strongly recommend securing your campervan well in advance, as the best ones book out fast.
Freedom camping rules & vehicle requirements
Freedom camping (i.e. camping outside formal campgrounds) is allowed in many locations, but only for self-contained vehicles — those equipped to handle waste, water, etc.
From 7 June 2026, New Zealand will require all private vehicles to hold a “green warrant” to be certified as self-contained.
In addition, camping is prohibited in areas where signs indicate “no camping,” and local council rules may restrict freedom camping near towns or on certain public lands.
Always research each region’s rules and respect signage — fines can apply for camping illegally.
Peak lupin bloom (wildflowers)
The lupin season typically peaks between November and December, especially around Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki. The best time to see them is often during the last week of November or the first week of December, though timing and exact locations can vary year to year.
Strict border checks & declaration rules
Be prepared: customs in New Zealand are thorough. Even if you have nothing to declare, your bags may be scanned and your documentation closely inspected.
Pack for all seasons
Weather can be unpredictable. Even in summer, you may face cold or rainy days. It’s wise to bring layers, waterproof gear, and “weather-ready” clothing.
Sandflies & sun protection
The land of sandflies — don’t forget insect repellent, especially near forests, lakes, or wetlands.
Also, the UV index can be very high: sunscreen is essential. Even 30 minutes in the sun without protection can cause burns.
International Visitor Levy (IVL)
As of recent reforms, most international visitors to New Zealand must pay a NZ $100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL). This amount replaced the previous NZ $35 fee.
This levy helps fund conservation efforts, infrastructure maintenance, and other tourism-related services.
Practical Information for Travelers
Language
The official languages of New Zealand are English, Te Reo Māori, and New Zealand Sign Language. English is widely spoken everywhere, so getting around as a tourist is very easy.
Currency
New Zealand’s currency is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD). Download a currency converter app before your trip to easily keep track of exchange rates.
Cash & payments
Most locals rarely use cash — nearly everything can be paid by card or phone. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, while American Express is often refused due to high fees. Apple Pay and Google Pay work in most places.
Tipping
Tipping is not a standard practice in New Zealand. Service charges are included in the price, but you can always leave a tip if you received exceptional service.
Water
Tap water is safe to drink everywhere in New Zealand. It’s fresh, clean, and doesn’t require buying bottled water.
Electricity
New Zealand uses 230 volts, with type I plugs (the same as Australia). Travelers from Europe, North America, and many parts of Asia will need an adapter.
Wifi & mobile data
Coverage is excellent in cities and towns, but more limited in remote areas. Free Wi-Fi is available in many cafés, libraries, and accommodations. Prepaid SIM cards with data can be purchased from Spark, Vodafone, or 2degrees, either at the airport, in shops, or even at gas stations. Portable Wi-Fi hotspots are also available from many rental companies.
