Te Matua Ngahere is another ancient kauri tree in the Waipoua Forest. Its name means Father of the Forest and it is one of the oldest trees in New Zealand. Some say it could be around 2,000 to 3,000 years old. The walk to get there is easy and peaceful. You go through native bush full of ferns, moss and bird sounds. When you finally see the tree, it feels almost unreal because it is so big and old. It is quieter here than at Tāne Mahuta.
