The Rocky Peak Summit Track near Wānaka is a moderately challenging hike that rewards you with some of the best views in the area. The trail starts at the Diamond Lake car park and steadily climbs through tussock and native shrubs, giving you glimpses of the surrounding hills as you go. It usually takes around two and a half to three and a half hours return, so plan for a half-day adventure. Wearing sturdy shoes is a good idea since some sections are uneven, and bringing a light jacket helps with wind or sudden changes in temperature. Once you reach the summit, the panoramic views of Lake Wānaka and the Southern Alps make every step worth it.
