Dunedin sits on the southeastern coast of the South Island and is known for its strong Scottish roots and grand old architecture. It’s home to one of New Zealand’s oldest universities, which gives parts of the city a lively, student feel. The Otago Peninsula is worth the short drive for its wild coastline and chance to see sea lions or albatross up close. Even if the city itself isn't that impressive, it’s a good base for exploring the beautiful landscapes nearby.
