Hokitika is a small West Coast town with a strong Māori heritage, especially linked to pounamu, also known as greenstone. This stone is highly valued in Māori culture and you will find many local carvers and workshops in town where you can learn more about its history and cultural meaning. Some places even let you watch artisans work, shaping pounamu into pendants and traditional designs.

The beach in Hokitika is wild, with driftwood scattered everywhere and big waves rolling in from the Tasman Sea. The famous driftwood sign on the beach is a fun spot for a photo.
