Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki are one of the most unique rock formations on the West Coast. The limestone cliffs have been shaped by the sea over millions of years and now look like stacks of thin stone pancakes piled on top of each other. The walk starts right from the car park in town and is an easy loop that takes about 20 minutes. It leads you along a well built path with great views of the rocks and the wild coastline.

When the tide is high and the sea is rough, the blowholes here are amazing to watch as water shoots up through holes in the rocks with a loud roar. It is one of the best times to visit, so check the tide before you go if you can. The area is also great for photos, especially when the waves crash against the cliffs. It is a classic West Coast stop and well worth the visit.
