Cook Strait is the stretch of sea you cross when you take the ferry between the South and North Island.

Most people just stay inside the boat, but if the weather is good and the crew allows it, you should definitely go outside on the deck during the crossing because the views are worth it.

When you leave Picton, you pass through the Marlborough Sounds and the hills drop straight into the water. As you get closer to the North Island, you start to see the coast around Wellington.
