The Diamond Lake Lookout Track near Wānaka is a short and rewarding walk that gives you big views without needing to commit to a long hike. Starting from the car park, the trail climbs steadily through native scrub to a platform overlooking the lake and surrounding hills. It’s well-formed and suitable for most fitness levels, so you can take it easy and still enjoy the scenery. The walk usually takes about an hour return, and bringing sturdy shoes and a light jacket is a good idea since parts of the track can be uneven and the wind can pick up. The views are especially lovely in the early morning or late afternoon when the light softens across the water.
