There is a free camp spot on the side of the beach in Christchurch that I think is great. There are toilets and shower facilities nearby and the beach is just a few steps away. You can enjoy a nice walk on the beach at sunset or sunrise when the colors in the sky are just magical. It does fill up quickly, so I recommend getting there early to beat the crowd and find a nice spot for the night.
