Glenorchy is a small town at the northern tip of Lake Wakatipu that feels like stepping into a postcard. The drive from Queenstown is just under an hour along one of New Zealand’s most scenic roads, with the lake on one side and mountains on the other, so make sure you leave time for a few photo stops along the way. Once you arrive, you’ll find a peaceful village with charming cafes, a few local shops, and plenty of access to walking trails and riverfront spots. Don’t miss the famous red timbered Glenorchy cabin, right next to Glenorchy wharf. It’s iconic of the traditional homes in colonial times and makes for a perfect photo opportunity.
It’s also a gateway to some incredible hikes and Lord of the Rings filming locations nearby, making it perfect for a day trip or an overnight stay. Early mornings here are magical, especially along the lake where the water mirrors the surrounding peaks.
