Lake Tekapo is one of those spots you have to stop at. The lake itself is this unreal shade of turquoise thanks to glacier-fed waters. On a clear day, the whole place looks like a painting, with the Southern Alps in the background and lupins blooming all around in spring (around November - December).

During the day, you can hike up to the top of Mount John for killer views, soak in the hot pools, or rent a bike and cruise around the lake.

Lake Tekapo is one of the world’s best stargazing spots, part of a Dark Sky Reserve. At night, don’t forget to look up! Photographers, you won't often get the chance to photograph the stars just as well, so I strongly recommend you set an alarm at 2am to shoot the sky. You can also book a tour if you want to get the full galaxy experience.
