Whakarewarewa, the Living Māori Village, is home to the Tūhourangi/Ngāti Wāhiao iwi, who have lived in the Rotorua area for generations. Visiting the village gives you a chance to see how these Māori families continue to live on their ancestral land, blending daily life with geothermal activity.

The villagers share stories about their history, traditions, and connection to the land. You can watch cultural performances, see traditional carving and weaving, and learn how they use the hot springs for cooking, bathing, and heating. The geothermal features are part of their heritage, not just a tourist attraction, and locals are proud to show how life has adapted around them.

Make sure to be respectful around homes and sacred areas, as this is still a living community, not just a display.
