The Ngātoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings are one of the coolest things to see on Lake Taupō. You can only get there by boat, kayak, or paddleboard because the carvings are on a cliff face directly above the water. The main carving is over 10 meters tall and was created in the late 1970s by master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell to honor his ancestor Ngātoroirangi, an important navigator in Māori history.

If you go by kayak, plan about 3 to 4 hours return from Taupō depending on your pace. Boat tours are faster and a good option if you want to relax and just enjoy the view.

You can book a boat tour through the GYG app (https://gyg.me/loicjlopez-app), using this link: https://www.getyourguide.com/taupo-l32328/lac-taupo-excursion-en-bateau-a-voile-vers-les-gravures-rupestres-maories-t397962/?ranking_uuid=234bf97a-82e2-4169-84ea-c189267605d0.
