Ulva Island is a small, predator-free island near Stewart Island that is amazing for wildlife. You usually get there by a short boat ride with a water taxi from Oban. Once on the island you can walk along easy tracks and see all kinds of birds and animals, many of which are very rare in the rest of New Zealand. Kākā, mōhua, and yellowhead birds are often spotted, and you might even see a kiwi if you go at night. The island is lush and green, and it feels like stepping into a peaceful nature sanctuary. It is also a great place for photography, with birds and forest scenes everywhere.
