Taupō is a peaceful lakeside town in the centre of the North Island. The lake is actually a huge volcanic crater and it is the largest lake in New Zealand. On a clear day, you can see the Tongariro volcanoes in the distance and the view is amazing, especially at sunrise or sunset.

You can do a lot here. People go fishing, boating, swimming, or just relax by the lake. There are hot springs close by, like the free hot stream at Spa Thermal Park, and many easy walks and bike trails. Huka Falls is also just a short drive from town and worth a visit.

I recommend staying for a couple of nights while you explore the region. The town has plenty of cafés, supermarkets, and campgrounds, and it is close to many great nature spots.
