Lake Matheson is one of the most famous mirror lakes in New Zealand and it really earns that reputation. The walk starts from a car park close to the café just outside Fox Glacier village, and the loop track around the lake takes about an hour and a half at a slow pace. The path is well formed and easy to follow, passing through lush forest before opening up to platforms where you can see perfect reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman on a calm day.

The best time to come is early morning or late evening when the water is still and the light is soft. These are the moments when the reflections are at their best for photos, so bring your camera and take your time. Just be ready for sandflies, especially near the water. They are always waiting, so carry repellent and you will enjoy the walk a lot more.
